Album Reviews: “Spur of the Moment” by Tiago Splitter

Tiago Splitter cover

What pushes an artist to open themselves up to this brutally cynical world we all live in.  I ask myself this question every single minute of every single day.  It’s an enigma that I’ve never been able to quite figure out.  But I know one thing, I don’t ask this question when I’m staring down the barrel of an absolute masterpiece.

Tiago Splitter’s debut album, “Spur of the Moment” achieves something that only few works of art can.  It makes you feel the entire world around you, while you sit alone in a closet (which is the best way to listen to this album).

Album Highlights

More than a Center – Have you ever taken a ride on a fiery horse.  “More than a Center” is the perfect way to start the album.  It’s the story of a young man (Tiago?) who must play bigger than he feels.  Musically, this one is a home run. Seven key changes in a song sounds like a bad idea… but not here.

Brazilian Lady – Have you ever surfed on a wave of pure tequila?  “Brazilian Lady” is a sultry tune that is far from subtle.  He takes us on a sensual journey with a girl named “Elena.”  Beautiful and disturbing.  Slightly NSFW.

The Fast Lane Part II – Have you ever had your heart ripped out my an infant?  “The Fast Lane Part II” brings the mood down a bit, while giving you a slight anxiety attack.  Tiago speaks of his life inside of “The Lane.”   If you are a fan of the french horn, you might wan to buckle up.

Tragic Block – Have you died and woken up in a new world where all you can see is a version of yourself making terrible mistakes?  “Tragic Block” is rumored to be the story of Tiago being blocked by LeBron.  With lines like “The King’s hand put a stop to my plan” you are sure to cry tears on fatal agony.  Don’t miss the flamenco guitar solo at the 16:34 minute mark.

36 over 4: A Lion Returns – Have you ever found love in the mirror?  “36 over 4: A Lion Returns” is the last song on the album and it ends with a celebratory bang.  Tiago returns to San Antonio and he expresses his uncontrollable joy.  The song ends with an introspective question that leaves a lasting impression… “What’s a Spur without a boot?”

We may never know the answer to that question but we do know one thing…  Tiago Splitter is a player who has the capability of taking over the entire music industry.  And that wouldn’t be a bad thing.
